Journaling my way through the pandemic

MAY 14, 2020: Better than Expected

I’ve been working at home every day for two months now. Prior to the pandemic I was already working from home twice per week, so I was ready to go when the order to shelter in place came.

Likewise, my spouse has been at home for two months, unable to work because her job is not deemed “essential”. That was cause for concern.

Overall, we get along pretty well. No major fights, no animosity. I’m pretty lucky in that regard.

But we’ve always had this thing, from even before we were married, where we would butt heads if 1) One of us was away from home for two weeks or longer; or 2) We were together every day for two weeks or longer.

Two weeks was pretty much our limit. After that, either the freedom to do whatever we wanted or the lack of freedom to do whatever we wanted caused one or both of us to be disagreeable. It would only last a short time, call it an adjustment period, and everything would be back to normal.

This time, however, I’m happy to report that after two months we have had no such disagreements. We’ve been a well-oiled machine (does anyone still oil machines these days?). We handle our necessary tasks without complaint, and even take a moment or two to enjoy a walk, something we haven’t done on a regular basis in nearly thirty years.

I can’t really explain why this is different from the other times we’ve experienced maximum cohabitation. Maybe the reason will come to me over time.

On the other hand: if it’s working, why spend time worrying about why?
